飛天魔毯不見得是幻想！科學家研究指出：一張具有彈性、且能產生振動的薄片，是有可能在空氣中漂浮、前進，就如同一千零一夜故事中的飛天魔毯！
你是否看過深海魚類-魟？柔軟地振動它們整片身軀，輕易地滑越海床？法國科學家M. Argentina的研究團隊由此得到靈感，分析流體中的振動薄片，在非常接近水平表面（比如地面）時的動力狀況。研究發現薄片能飄浮的關鍵在於：藉著振動來推動薄片與地面之間的流體、使其產生持續向上的壓力，來平衡薄片本身的重量；只要讓薄片略微傾斜，薄片就會往較高一端的方向前進。其研究論文已發表在 Physical Review Letters上。
科學家認為以現階段的技術，應該有辦法讓長10cm大小、厚0.1mm的薄片飄浮前進。至於有沒有辦法造出載人的魔毯？科學家認為這絕沒有違反物理律，但是，需要很有力的引擎來製造夠大的振動，不過，這樣一來，魔毯坐起來可能不怎麼舒適、會非常顛簸。
